The Baby Trio Meets!

In the past eight months our family has welcomed three new babies into the family.  Derek started off the baby boom with his birth in September, Ivan was next in October and Caroline finished it up in February.   So, on Sunday we gathered the troops together for an afternoon of babies, cousins, aunts, uncles, moms, dads and grandparents and enjoyed an afternoon of family fun.

Ivan, Caroline & Derek

Ivan leaning in for a kiss!

I love how Caroline is holding Derek, so cute!

We could not forget Cole and Mari!

A little too much camera action fo Derek!

How cute are these two?

This is just part one of the day, with the 300 and some pictures I took, there is definitely another blog post or two to come!

Cake Pops!

Yes, they taste as good as they sound!  There are a few people who have requested the "how to" guide in creating these little gems!

Step 1:  Bake a cake!
I use Duncan Hines because, I think it tastes better then Betty Crocker.

A standard pyrex pan will get the job done!

Step 2:  Break up cake in to small chunks, place in food processor and process until it looks like bread crumbs.
This was FUN!

Bread crumblike

Step 3: Add a small amount of frosting (i used vanilla since it was a white cake), mix it in well with hands, roll into small balls, place on cookie sheet and refrigerate for a few hours.

Step 4:  Gather decorating supplies!  I purchased the chocolate/candy melts at Michael's and my Mom had all of the sprinkles from various stores.  Melt the chocolate/candy per the directions on the bag, we used a handy dandy chocolate warmer to keep the chocolate melted while using it.

So pretty!

Step 5:  Dip stick into melted chocolate and slowly push into cake ball, dip the cake ball in chocolate, make sure you cover entire ball (no cake showing) and decorate.  Tip:  Only pull out a couple balls out of the frig at a time so they do not get to soft.

Serious face needed when covering cake balls!

Decorate!

Step 6:  Place in styrofoam (cover foam, so you can reuse, it is kind of pricey) and put in frig to harden.

Enjoy!

Tips:

Cake Mix:  I use Duncan Hines, but changed the recipe to make it more healthy....

-Cake Mix
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/2 cup water
Bake per instructions on box.

Frosting:  We used a homemade frosting recipe, but you can used canned frosting.  Be sure to only use a little bit, no more than 1/3 cup frosting.

Balls:  Keep refrigerated for as long as possible to avoid them getting to soft and breaking apart.  Covering them in chocolate takes a long time, sit down and relax cause you are going to be there awhile!

Storage:  You can freeze these guys up to a month, if you do not freeze, refrigerate and eat within one week (not going to be a problem at my house).

Lifeguarding at it's best!

This morning I ran across this article on cnn.com and boy did it bring back memories.  After years of lifeguarding for the City of Huntington Beach I can totally relate to statements made by the lifeguards in this story, all of them are so true!  Everyone please read #10, it is the most important, if you put floaties on your child we cannot be friends (no if's ands or but's).  I have to say #15 is my favorite and even today I am the first one to go off the diving board.  I never want to grow up!  :)

(CNN) -- Unlike most teens in high school, I didn't come home from my summer job smelling like hamburger grease or department store hangers. I spent my days stretched out in a chair, slathered in SPF 30, occasionally lifting my polarized sunglasses to double-check the bottom of the pool for drowning children. Like the saying goes, it's a tough job, but someone's got to do it.  Of course, there are downsides to anything that pays minimum wage. That hamburger scent was replaced by the lingering smell of chlorine. My blond hair always had a slight green tint to it. And I found myself involuntarily yelling "No running!" at random kids in the mall on my days off.  I trained hard at 15 to become this "Baywatch" wannabe. The Red Cross certifies lifeguards only after an intensive, 30-plus-hour course on CPR, first aid and rescue skills with both a written and physical final exam.  Thankfully, there are thousands of similarly trained lifeguards around the country keeping watch over your summer water fun. Their first priority is safety. But there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes that they'd never tell you.  Think you know all there is to know about sunscreen, chlorine and pool "accidents"? Check out these secrets from lifeguards past and present.

1. We clean the bathrooms ...

"Most of the time, we're the ones doing the daily cleaning, and a professional comes by once a week. Would you leave the cleanliness of your bathroom to high school kids?"

-- Greg, a Texas lifeguard and pool manager for five years

Plantar warts are caused by an HPV infection on the bottom of your feet. The virus thrives in warm, moist environments, according to the Mayo Clinic, so pool decks, locker rooms and shower floors are perfect places for it to hang out. Save yourself a painful visit to the doctor's office by wearing flip-flops any time you're not in the water.

2. ... and run the concession stand
"The cheese sauce on your nachos? It's probably been reheated for at least a week, if not longer."

-- Grant, a Chicago suburbs lifeguard for 10 years

Bring your own snacks to the pool; it's easier to entice kids to take a break and reapply sunscreen while they're chomping down. And remember to drink lots of water -- heat stroke is caused by excessive heat and dehydration.

3. We can't watch everyone  "Even the best lifeguards can miss something while watching a crowded beach with over 200 swimmers. Never assume that the lifeguards will do their job perfectly."

-- Noah, a Jersey Shore ocean lifeguard for more than 10 years

Lifeguards are trained to scan their space repeatedly from front to back, left to right and zigzag. If you see a guard on duty repeatedly looking down to talk to someone or staring off in the distance, notify a manager.
On the flip side, don't be the patron who's distracting us with a 30-minute monologue about your favorite frozen treat flavor.

4. Our pool shouldn't smell like chlorine
"If the pool chemicals are a little off, we're going to look the other way until we really, really need to fix them."

-- Greg, a Texas lifeguard and pool manager for five years

The strong odors are called chloramines, which come from bodily fluids that are breaking down the chlorine in the pool, New Orleans pool consultant Josh Ulfers says. "A properly maintained and sanitized pool should not have much of a chlorine odor." Too much chlorine, on the other hand, can cause coughing, burning in the eyes and nausea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Leave the pool area if you experience any of these symptoms.

5. We don't always clear the pool after an "accident" ...

"Even though most cities require pools to be closed when someone's kid goes No. 2 in the pool, the majority of pools I have worked for just add a little more chlorine. In one instance, I was working as a swim instructor and there was a particularly 'serious' incident where I was just instructed to teach my students on the opposite end of the pool. Completely gross, but they didn't want to lose the revenue from having to cancel lessons."

-- Jeremy, a Tucson, Arizona, beach and pool lifeguard for five years

Breaking news bulletin: Fecal matter can carry serious germs. If you see (or have) an accident, tell a lifeguard immediately and make sure to exit the pool. State and local guidelines vary, but the CDC recommends that pools raise their chlorine levels and shut down for at least 30 minutes.

6. ... and if we do, it's not always real

"At one point, a fellow lifeguard and I sank a Snickers bar so we could have an hour break and make everyone clear the pool. It was the best time ever ... we ordered lunch from a local pizza shop."

-- Alan, a Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, lifeguard for two years

Ever seen "Caddyshack"? We have, and each time a summer camp, day care center or pack of obnoxious teens enters the pool, we dream of pulling the same stunt.

7. We need you to watch your kids

"Keep an eye on your toddlers. Hell, keep both eyes on them. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a 2-year-old walk down the steps at the shallow end and keep walking until he's underwater because he has no idea what's happening. And Mom's busy chatting 5 feet away, not paying attention."

-- Shaun, a Greenwich, Connecticut, lifeguard for six years

8. We swim after we eat

"No Red Cross records exist that anyone ever got a stomach cramp from going into the water too soon after eating."

-- Robert, a Far Rockaway, New York, lifeguard

Granted, the Red Cross doesn't keep track of such incidents. But while cramping can occur, it's rare and hardly life-threatening. Snopes.com dismissed that rumor in 2005, saying that there has never been a drowning attributed to entering the water less than an hour after eating.

9. Thunder is our best friend

"If it's raining or we hear the faintest sound of thunder -- even if it's potentially just a loud truck passing by -- we're closing the pool for 30 minutes. Our job is all about safety, remember?"

-- Greg, a Texas lifeguard and pool manager for five years

We know the storm cloud is miles away and your kids don't mind swimming in the rain. But our guidelines require us to clear everyone away from the water for at least 30 minutes if we hear thunder or see lightning to ensure you don't get electrocuted. Plus, it gives us a chance to grab our umbrellas.

10. We hate floaties

"Arm floaties or swimsuits with life jacket-like belts sewn in are, in fact, dangerous. It's a false sense of security. An arm floatie can pop and strand a weak swimmer far from a wall or shallow water. The life jacket belts can just as easily hold a kid upside down on the surface as right side up. There is no replacement for teaching your kids water safety skills and keeping a close watch."

-- Mary, a San Francisco lifeguard for 10 years

11. The thought of doing CPR scares us

"When I almost had to give CPR, I completely locked up and was unable to actually assist at first."

-- Alan, a Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, lifeguard for two years

Contrary to what you see on TV medical dramas, only 5% to 15% of people who are given standard CPR survive cardiac arrest, according to the Journal of Emergency Medical Services. And lifeguards know this -- our first plan of action will always be to call 911.

12. We know when you drop your kids off

"If you're leaving your children at the pool for more than four hours every day, we're going to be on a first-name basis and know your entire life story -- even if we've never met you."

-- Greg, a Texas lifeguard and pool manager for five years

There was once an 8-year-old child who spent the afternoon at my pool alone. Before she left, I found out that her mother was "sleeping over" at her neighbor's house, her brother had flunked seventh-grade math and her grandma sometimes forgot to wear underwear. That's not a picture I needed in my head.   The majority of pools have rules against leaving children under the age of 16 at the pool unsupervised. Lifeguards are not baby sitters. Period.

13. We have rules for a reason

"We are trained to notice people who are struggling and how to discern playful splashing from panicked swimming, which is why virtually every pool includes 'no splashing' rules. Most injuries at the pool are caused by people running or horsing around, not water emergencies. It's wet and it's slippery. Teach your kids to walk, rather than run, and to look before they leap into the pool; jumping in on top of someone else can cause a severe injury."

-- Mary, a San Francisco lifeguard for 10 years

14. We care about tan lines

"At the country club, some of us would lifeguard with a piece of pizza in hand, twirling the whistle in the other with our swimsuit straps down to ensure the best tan."

-- Caitlin, a Pittsburgh lifeguard

Although highly discouraged by medical experts everywhere, tanning is a necessary peril of sitting in the sun all day. So it makes sense that lifeguards are the unofficial experts. If you're looking to get a little color fast, buy formulas that contain carrot oil, a natural tanning enhancer.

But make sure to also layer on the sunscreen -- the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends an SPF of at least 30, reapplied every two hours, if you'll be in the sun for a while. Pay close attention to oft-missed spots like the back of your neck, tops of your feet and tops of your ears.

15. We're still kids ourselves

"We love our jobs, and playing on the diving board anytime we're not on the guard stand. It's an unwritten rule that the guard with the best diving board tricks deserves the most respect."

-- Greg, a Texas lifeguard and pool manager for five years

Stay safe and we will see you at the POOL!

Happy Heart!

After I attended my friend Marisa's onesie making baby shower I have been inspired to decorate my own onesies and t-shirts for may favorite kiddo's and to maybe one day sell.  Well a couple weeks ago, I made a shirt for little Miss Mari and over the weekend I got this.....

Just another cool thing my iphone can do!

I made this one for Caroline, but sadly it was too small.

A quick Trip up North

Gracie and I are back from our mini vacay this weekend!  We had a great time visiting the saladbowl steiny's aka Kate, Jason and Charlie dog, in Salinas hence the the saladbowl name over the weekend.  After a busy morning on Thursday, new brakes and an oil change for my car, some moral support for my Mom and lunch at the Champagne Bakery, Gracie and I got on the road about 2pm and headed out to see our friends.  We made great time and arrived there in just over 6 hours on the road.  Gracie was an awesome travel dog, she slept 99% of the time, only needed one bathroom break and did not chew on any part of the car during the trip, way to go GRACIE!

Friday:

Kate, Charlie, Gracie and I hit the road for a day of adventure.  First stop was Garland Ranch for a nice morning hike and an unexpected swim for the dogs.  Kate's pup Charlie is a mixed breed (Lab &?) and lets just say his water loving Lab genes were pretty much non existent until Gracie came to town.  About mid hike we came upon this pond that I am still not sure if it is safe to swim in but we let the pups go in anyways.  Lets just say we practically had to drag the pups out by their tails cause they were having soooo much fun.

Everyone needs a self portrait

Look at her FLY!

Catch me if you can Charlie!

Look at that skill Gracie has, she makes me so proud!

After our hike at Garland Ranch we headed to Carmel for an afternoon at the beach.  It was really windy but that did not stop Gracie and her new water loving friend Charlie from enjoying a nice afternoon in the waves.

A post beach kiss in the back of the station wagon (Trouble!)

After the beach we loaded up the pups and went to get lunch at this lil Italian restaurant that Kate loves, it was so good.  Here are a few pics of the inside of the restaurant, our lunch and some nut who had a hairbrush sticking out of the side of her head.

Good news there is another location at South Coast Plaza.

I could of loaned her a clip.

After lunch we visited the City of Seaside where Kate works. Lol, I told my boss that I needed the time off so that I could go do some "research" for work by visiting the City of Seaside instead of going to the Santa Margarita Water Districts annual water awareness day on Saturday.  I told her I would come back with great ideas on how we could promote our programs and I think I have found it....

A bus should do the trick!

Proof I was there!

After we visited the City of Seaside we headed home, gave the pups a much needed bath and crashed for the afternoon!

Saturday:

Kate and I left the pups with Jason and ran a couple errands and visited downtown Salinas (woohoo), not a bustling city, but we had a good time walking around and hitting up the local fabric/craft store.

I showed amazing self control and only came home with these!

Sunday:

We hit the Gilroy outlet stores with the church youth group, I however did not bring enough dog food for Gracie so I went off on my own in search of her special dog food and after I located some I went and did a little shopping.  It has been a few years since I have been to these outlets and I was shocked when I saw this...
Yes, that is esprit, they went out of business years ago and somehow managed to make a come back!  Oh, how I loved esprit when I was growing up.

Thanks Kate, Jason and Charlie for a great weekend!

We are out of here!!

Happy 3rd Birthday Gracie!

My sweet little pup turned 3years old today! I cannot believe it, where has the time gone?  I adopted Gracie on July 5, when she was 7 weeks old.  Holy cow, I am surprised we are both alive to talk about it.  Sweet lil Gracie has been quite the challenge these past three years and I have to say she has turned over a new leaf and has headed to mellow dog land (Mom/Dad, I am not making this up).  I remember when I got her everyone said wait until she turns three and she will be a different dog, all I could think is I have to wait three years for this?

Well, Gracie is now three years old and a great dog, she no longer jumps up on the counter when I am cooking, I can tell her to go lay down on her bed and she will, she has not chewed on the furniture in a couple years (knock on wood), she is my protector, if she does not like you and she thinks you are too close to me she will attack (sorry scary skateboard guy, I had to use all of my strength to hold her back) and she loves to just lay in the sun, now that is my kind of dog!

Gracie's Favorite Things!
  • playing ball
  • chasing birds, bunnies and anything that moves
  • chasing me on my scooter
  • going to the beach
  • ripping all of the stuffing out of toys
  • hiking in O'neill Park
  • EATING
  • laying in the sun
  • going over to Grammy & Grampy's house
  • playing with her BFF Lucy
  • swimming
  • eating sticks and grass
  • going to camp

The day I brought Gracie home, so cute!

Teaching her how to swim!

The shoe she ate!

The Birthday Girl!

Happy Birthday Gracie!

Now, this is kinda cool!!

So last week I blogged about the horrible mother that locked her children in the HOT HOT  HOT car and when she came out I yelled and screamed at her for doing so.  After that incident I had arranged for one of the head honchos at the RSM sheriff's department to come out the next day and educate "bad Mom" on the dangers of children and hot cars, but get this "bad Mom" never showed up again.  Normally, her older child goes to the YMCA in our building everyday after school, but after this incident he has not been back.  I love it, now I know she thinks about her horrible actions everyday when she should be picking up her son from the YMCA.  To me this is mission accomplished, I hope I saved those babies lives click here to read all about it.  Well, my Mom passed my blog post on to many of her friends just to help get the word out on how dangerous it is to leave children in hot cars and I have to say I am pretty pleased with the response I/she got back.  Below are a few responses that we received....

  • Good job, Erin (Noel Ross)
  • Oh wow. Did Erin really talk to this woman or was it something she read and posted on her blog??
    Crazy people, huh?!! (Patti Prizler)
  • Yes, she really DID talk to the woman that way.  She's amazing/surprising!  It was unbelievable that the woman could have cared less, especially when her toddler was dripping with sweat. (My Mom to Patti)
  • Awesome! On all of it. So thrilled that she had the gumption to hold her accountable. Love that!! Did she get photos of it too?? That would be great cuz it would hold up in court better. CPS and the courts have many loop holes. (Patti Prizler- Part 2)
  • Hi Jodi and youall, you can kiss your butt goodbye, if you get caught leaving children or pets unattended/unsupervised (adult) in a closed vehicle, ANYTIME, here in Australia.  (Lex Morris)
  • Thanks for the message! I am right there with you on this note! We are the ones that are supposed to be taking special care of the children. Erin is so right! (Judi Fabrizio)
  • Hi Erin, Your old nursery school teacher here! Good story, sad story, but I am so proud that you followed through and took care of business. There's a bumper sticker my daughter Tracy has that states,"Speak up, even if your voice is shaking". It's something I try to live by and I wish more people did too. You are quite a young woman. (Shirley York, my preschool teacher)
And for the very BEST part of this story....

Today I received a phone call from one of my part-time staff, Matt. Matt called and said to me "Erin, you have inspired me".  I was kind of curious, I mean who could blame him for wanting to be like me, I think I am the coolest person around (ha ha, kidding), anyway he went on to tell me that he pulled into a parking lot to go grab some food before coming into work and as he was deciding what to go get he heard a baby crying, so he looked around and the car next to him he noticed the windows rolled down and a small baby left all alone in his carseat.  Well, he remembered the saga from last week and sprung into action.  Matt got on the phone and called 911 and told them there was baby left alone in a car near him.  As he was on the phone the mother came out and was yelling and screaming at him for calling the police on her.  She was afraid that they were going to come and take her kids away (they should), Matt yelled at her and told her what a bad Mom she was for leaving her baby all alone in the car.  Thankfully this time it was not hot out, but the baby could of easily been kidnapped and the Mom would never of seen it.  The best part was she knew she was wrong for leaving her baby, but wanted to blame Matt for calling the police (like he had done something wrong, more like way to go Matt) on her and she threatened to call the police on him for yelling at her.  The dumb B*&^%$# (excuse my language) claimed it was not against the law to leave children in the car.  HOW STUPID IS SHE??  Anyway, I am so glad to report that in one week I/we have been able to educate two Mom's on the dangers of leaving their babies in cars all alone!  They better not do it again!!

To all of my readers, KEEP spreading the word!

If you live in South Orange County area or the 949 area code like me, when calling 911 from a cell phone it goes to the CHP instead of the local dispatch center, so in order to avoid that you need to dial 949.770.6011 and it will take you straight to dispatch for a quicker response time.  For all of you that do not live in South Orange County or the 949, you need to find out the best number to call from a cell phone in your area and add it to your contacts.  911 is still the best to call from your home and will work from your cell phone, but you can save time and lives if you have the direct dispatch number.

30 days free and clear!

Hi my name is Erin and I am a coffee addict.  Today I celebrate the one month mark of NO coffee!!!  Yep, you read that right I have not been to Starbucks or any other coffee shop for 30 days.  30 days of no coffee or caffeine has been a challenge and I still feel the pull back to the mothership, but I am staying strong and pushing forward. A lot of people I know had doubts that I could do it, I am proud to have proved them wrong! I think it will be at least another month before I can enjoy a white mocha here and there without getting hooked, I am so an addict.  The best news in all of this is my wallet is getting fatter ($$$ savings) and my pancreas is healthier (no more sugar).

Not COOL at ALL!

Today it was a HOT HOT day in Rancho Santa Margarita, when I got back form my lunch/dinner break at 5pm it was 92 degrees out, just a little toatsy.  Well, I pull into the parking lot and I notice a car that was parked basically in the middle of the road, so I pull into the nearest spot and as I get out of my car I notice a 2 year old little girl looking out the window of the car that was parked in the middle of the road. I walk up to the car and at this point my blood is starting to boil cause I realize that she is in a locked car with the windows up and no air conditioning on.  I try to open all of the car doors but the car is locked, I look around and cannot find her parents anywhere.  Trying to figure out what my next move is, cause I cannot just leave her there.  A couple minutes later her mom comes walking out of the community center like it is no big deal that she just left her child in a hot car.  Well, I am mad!  I start yelling at the mom telling her what a bad mom she is for leaving her child in the car all alone on a hot day with no fresh air.  I yell at her for probably 5 minutes.  In the meantime as I am yelling and causing a scene she opens the car door and I realize there is also an infant in there.  WHO DOES THAT?  How can anyone in their right mind leave two babies in the car all alone?  So, I yell some more, I am even more mad now that I see the infant in the car also.  It was so sad to see the little girl, she was dripping in sweat when then POS of a mother opened the car door.  Poor baby, it made me want to take both kids out and take them home.

Well, tomorrow afternoon this bad mom will find me waiting in the parking lot for her and I will have someone from the Sheriff's department waiting inside the community center for her to come in to pick up her older child and give her the lecture of a lifetime.  I cannot wait to see the look on her face and her to know she messed with the wrong blonde, cause this blonde does not tolerate behavior like this.  If she cannot not take the time to unbuckle her kids and bring them inside with her to ensure their safety then she does not deserve the right to keep them.  Let me tell you, she will never forget me!!!

So this is my public service announcement, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not leave your kids unattended in a car.  Children die every year due to being locked in hot cars.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 'a locked car sitting in the summer sun quickly turns into an oven,' and 'temperatures can climb from 78 degrees to 100 degrees in just three minutes, to 125 degrees in 6-8 minutes.".  That is way to hot for a child.  Below is a link safekids.org and a pledge that every parent should take!

Please pass this blog post on to all of your friends and family or repost on your blog!

Pledge to Never leave you child alone in a car even for a minute

Just my thoughts!

Did you know that you can bring your dog into Home Depot?  I think that is utterly ridiculous and I will NEVER EVER bring my sweet little cannot do anything wrong angel Gracie there.  The only store that I think pets should be allowed in is the pet store, but I guess not everyone see's things the way I do, such a shame!  Lol!!  Anyway, the other day super dad and I were at Home Depot buying some more supplies for my front gate (geez, I need to stop talking about the darn gate) and we stopped in the most "manly"section of the store the "tool" section and there was this woman standing in the middle of the "tool" section of Home Depot with her little rat on a rope type of a dog dressed in a dress!  Come on people, really a dog dressed in a dress at Home Depot? Seriously?  Oh my gosh!  I had to really control my mouth because a sarcastic comment almost came out in a very loud voice about how ridiculous she and her dog looked and I probably would of embarrassed super dad!

Something similar to what I saw!
