Yesterday at work all RSM employee's had to attend an Earthquake Preparedness class hosted by the Red Cross (being a public employee we are all required to go through yearly disaster training). It was a great reminder that we are over due for a huge earthquake at any moment and that we NEED to be prepared. So, now all of you in bloggyland this is your friendly reminder to either start putting together an earthquake kit or to go and update the one you already have. The Red Cross recommends having AT LEAST 7-10 days worth of food, water and medication on hand in the event of a disaster, you also want to put some $$$ (small bills $1's & $5's) in your kit, since banks and ATM's will probably be closed. It is important to have an out of state contact to let them you are ok and for other family members to contact so everyone knows the status of the family, most likely the long distance phone lines will be working sooner then the local lines. You also need to think about being prepared at work and in your car!!!
Don't forget about your furry four-legged friends, you need to have food and water for them also! The Red Cross also suggests keeping a copy of all vaccination records, feeding instructions, a current photo of your pet and emergency contact numbers with your emergency supplies in case you have to leave your furball at a shelter, some shelters will not take in pets without proof of vaccinations, so it is VERY important to have them with you.
Being prepared is the BEST thing you can do for yourself and your family!! For more information and a list of items you will need visit the American Red Cross! Don't forget to duck, cover and hold on!!! Above is a picture of the handy dandy earthquake kit I won yesterday!!
Wow, we don't have to worry about earthquakes here in AL but this is a good idea since we have lots of tornadoes. Thanks!
